Tobacco box in the shape of a tribal basket with embossed decoration imitating wicker. A small chain joins the box to its lid. Solid silver, with fine darkish patina. South-East Asia, Northern Burma, Golden Triangle Region, Akha Tribes. Length: around 2 3/8" (6,3cm). Very good condition despite several signs of use and age.

Unique and beautiful describe this fantastical seahorse medicine container from Indonesia. Entirely hand made by using a complex lost wax process. It is a composition white brass or bronze like metal. It opens to hold medicine. Seahorse has human figures on it, to my understanding this is meant for protection. Piece is 5 1/2" long and heavy cast. A great piece of Folk art.

Small boxes for storing ingredients needed for betelnut chewing were produced in wonderfully diverse designs throughout Southeast Asia. This one, a singha, a mythical lion-like creature, shows the great detail and care lavished on betel containers by Khmer artisans who produced these hammered silver boxes in an array of fantastic animal shapes.
