This shoulder bag was made and used by the Hmoung women of northern Thailand. It would carry all the traditional items which would have been commonly found in a woman's purse. The bag fabric was hand loomed from the indigenous plants and then embroidered using traditional cross-stitched with geometric patterns. Beads, silver ornaments and tiny pompoms are added for decorative enhancement of the bagface. This piece is in good condition. ... Click for details

Rare three paneled men’s wrap from the Nung/Rawang ethnic group of the Kachin State, Burma. The weaving technique and materials are quite unique which I have not encountered with any other ethnic group. The base warp and weft foundation is made from hemp fiber, the pile is made from cotton, and the finished maroon colored ends are finished in wool. All the fibers on this piece are handspun with the exception of the bright colored yarn which are “store bought” synthetics. The Rawang are... Click for details

A rare abaca (banana plant fiber) yellow tritik tube skirt, circa the 1950s, maybe much earlier, from the Bagobo (probably Manobo) people of south central Mindanao, Philippines. Comprised of two abaca cloth panels sewn together on the sides, the skirt has three highly stylized humans with upraised arms as main pattern, framed by rows of zigzags, lozenges, Xs and the bamboo shoot motifs. The pattern is repeated on the lower half and the other side of the skirt. These tritik white designs were cre... Click for details

Good Iban woman’s skirt depicting tree of life with bamboo running the length of the bidang reaching above the forest canopy, circa 1950s. Aside from commercial thread on sides, it is composed of all natural dyes and handspun thread. There are the inevitable few pin holes and a few small tears on one side (this indicates where the skirt has been taken in to have a better fit on the waist). The side borders are made from commercial dye and thread while the center is all handspun thread a... Click for details

Fine Iban woman’s skirt from near Kapit, circa 1950s, with bangkit fruit pattern, signifying fruitful abundance. Apart from the inevitable few pin holes and a couple of very minor frays on the edge, this piece is in excellent condition. The red and yellow side borders are made from commercial thread while the center is all handspun thread with natural colored indigo and vegetable dye. L: 102cm/40in and W: 52cm/20.5in. It should be noted that Iban weavings are one of the few well documented... Click for details
