Aside from commercial thread on sides, it is composed of all natural dyes and handspun thread. Fine Iban woman’s skirt from near Kapit, circa 1950s, with bangkit fruit pattern, signifying fruitful abundance. Apart from the inevitable few pin holes and a couple of very minor frays on the edge, this piece is in excellent condition. The red and yellow side borders are made from commercial thread while the center is all handspun thread with natural colored indigo and vegetable dye. L: 102cm/40in and W: 52cm/20.5in. From the Mandaya people of southeastern Mindanao, Philippines comes this abaca (banana plant fiber) cloth bag circa the 1950s. The bag is made of abaca, dyed in natural colors. The pattern on the abaca bag is the signature Mandaya motif of a human ( called “u-tau”). From the Maranaw people of northwestern Mindanao, Philippines, comes this tubular garment (locally called “malong a landap”) circa the1960s. This malong is of thick silk fabric (probably silk and cotton?). Joining the yellow and maroon panels are tapestry-weave bands (called “langkit”), the narrower bands (2 inches wide) called “tobiran” and wider band (4 inches wide) called “lakban”. From the Gaddang people of northern Luzon, Philippines, comes this beaded hand-sewn red blouse circa the 1930s, probably much earlier. The blouse is made of red commercial cotton cloth, embellished with beads, buttons and metal dangles. At the front bodice is a button arrangement along the buttonhole area, with one red button to tack in the blouse. Circa 1950s, possibly earlier, this is a beaded cotton blouse (locally called “albong”) from the Bilaan people of south central Mindanao, Philippines. Made of red and dark blue commercial cotton cloth, the blouse is decorated with white beads and multi-colored thread embroidery.
