This beautiful textile is in a traditional Laotian style and was hand woven in the “Khet” process in which the warp yarns are cotton thread and the weft yarns are raw silk. The design is executed in a colorful geometric weave with stylized birds and diagonal bands in teals, burgundies, yellow, pink and off white against a black background. All natural dyes have been used. This type of weaving is very time consuming and is becoming quite scarce today as Laotian weavers move to the city to fin... Click for details

Each of Indonesia’s more than 350 ethnic and linguistic groups had their own distinctive textile traditions. This cotton ikat from the Island of Java was probably produced by a small, family-owned group of weavers, and required cultivating cotton, spinning, dying and the use of a hand loom to create. Used also as a baby carrier this is part of a Khami woman’s traditional dress called a “htip paum”. Of the many I examined I chose this and the other one listed for their unusual pictorial patterns. The Khami are linguistically related to the Chin but are low land rice farmers and live in the Delta region of the Kaladan River in western Burma. Please note that the pattern is hand embroidered on one side only and not woven in. This piece is aprox 30 years or older and is excellent condition. The ... Click for details

I examined at least 100 blankets from the Naga people of Burma on a recent buying trip and this was the best of the lot. It is over 30 years old, has an exceptionally tight weave, yet is very supple indicating an older production, and is embroidered with silk thread (the only one I saw like this). Excellent condition. Dimensions 1.68m/5.5ft x 1.03m/3.5ft.
