This work is a house ornament from a traditional Batik house. It is of a form called a "Jorngon" or "Jenggar" depicting a mythical tricornic animal or singha head. This piece would have been found on the horizontal bar or balcony of a Batak house, used a guardian against evil spirits. 83 inches tall x 40 inches wide

This was and is a working marionette. You will have to re-attach some strings or restring the thicker white cords which are usually put on for sellling. Very nice hand carving and dressing. This marionette is probably 40 or more years old he has a good-cheerful feeling about him. He is 21" long. He has mouth that opens, he has nice articulated hands and pegged in real hair. Could be used for shows or as a collective decoration. A magical piece of art.

Box in the shape of a large egg on an elevated base, with small lid. Wood, with geometric design around body and rooster carved in the round on top of lid. A cord links lid to body. Beautiful dark glossy patina. Indonesia, Sumba Island. Height: 9 1/2" (24 cm). Erosion all over, some small dents, old traces of infestation, otherwise very good condition. A superb and rather unusual piece.
