There are few roads in New Guinea, with the rivers being used as transportation arteries. The various indigenous groups living along the Sepik River of New Guinea make canoes made from hollowed logs and the prows were often carved in the form of crocodiles. Many of the tribes or villages can be recognized by the style of the croc prow of the canoe. This croc head is the remains of an old canoe prow from the mid region of the Sepik river. A rare carved Sepik River Mask decorated with applied cowrie, other shells and human hair. This item is 'old' by Papua New Guinea standards having been made pre 1970. There are losses to the applied decoration (some having been re-glued) and one of the boars tusks is missing from the nose. 16.5 inches (42cm) Long.

Abelam Peoples, Sepik River Culture Area, New Guinea. This woven yam mask was used during the yam harvest festivals, covering the prize yam to the admiration of others. Measuring approximately 11" (28 cm.) overall, there are some losses to the top, consistent with age. Funny face.
