The Phantom Shields began when comics provided the first opportunity to learn to read in the Highlands. The Phantom was eternal and invincible making him an ideal image for a shield.

Abelam Peoples, Sepik River Culture Area, New Guinea. This woven yam mask was used during the yam harvest festivals, covering the prize yam to the admiration of others. Measuring approximately 11" (28 cm.) overall, there are some losses to the top, consistent with age. Funny face.

Large carved wooden "Ancestor's Pole," dating between 1950 and 1960, coming from Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Asmats did not believe in natural causes of death. This was not only due to the fact that numerous Asmats were killed in fightings between the villages: passing away after an illness or in old age was considered to be the result of witchcraft and was in turn the starting point for new fightings with other villages.
