This is an old Japanese Samurai Battle Banner remnant. It is made of silk and mounted on a scroll. The paper mounting has cracks and staining due to improper storage. The battle flag portion remains in very good condition and would look excellent with an inexpensive remounting. It features two famous Samurai mons (family crests). This very well designed and carved wood (boxwood) netsuke is 1 ¾” high, 2” wide and 1 ½” thick. It depicts three pods of a Japanese lantern plant (some people call it a Chinese lantern). Two big lanterns and one small lantern are arranged along a stem with a curly leaf which has a few insect bites. It is dated late 18th century and it is not signed. It is in excellent condition.
