This assortment of cosmetic brushes along with the small container was originally part of a large cosmetic set which would have been commissioned for the a wealthy Japanese bridal trousseaux. Many layers of the rich black roiro-nuri lacquer was applied and polished to achieve the deep lusterious tone. The brushes are accented with a 2 and 3 tone golden floral motif. Wonderful lacquer monk's hat, very simple dome shape, decorated with a dragon in gold lacquer, outside of hat is a deep brown lacquer, interior is lacquered a deep red, original cotton straps on inside.

A JAPANESE PAINTED & LACQUERED FOLDING FAN, MEIJI.
The fan, complete with original wooden box, is nicely painted on one side with a rural scene with Fuji in the background. The back is very carefully painted with flowers. The original silk ribbon that kept the fan blades spaced is not in place making the fan difficult to display for the photographs. The ribbon is present. The fan sticks are lacquered in gold and silver with birds and chrysanthemums...

From the late Edo c.1865 this is the best antique Japanese 'tsuno' face washing basin Kodo Arts has ever seen. Used in Kyoto by a Gion District geisha, the thickly black lacquered wood basin has maki-e gold swirling rivers and flowers on its banks throughout. Japanese small papier mache lacquered covered box (Kogo). decorated with gold Makie clouds and seed pods. Fine condition. Circa 1900-1915. About 3 inches in diameter.
The only differences between this matching pair of Japanese woman's hair combs are the very slight details in the hand-painted design and the size and spacing of the tines. The finely detailed lacquer design was painted in 3 shades of gold. Unfortunately the minute details, flower petals and tree knots are hard to see in the photos.
