Ivory netsuke of a sitting courtier (recognizable by his tall hat) wearing formal garments and holding an open fan in his hands. Extremely well carved out of beautiful even ivory with cross-hatching pattern seen on the bottom of the piece. Excellent clean carving with expert polychrome decoration, wonderful level of detail, perfectly captured facial expression. Two panels of yellow coarse cotton ground sewn together. Painted and printed with a leopard, snake and four quails. These cloths were used in Afghanistan for a special hunting technique of partridges. Possibly of Malinke origin, the features of this wooden figure recall sculptures from both the Dogon and Bamana peoples. Made from a tight-grained wood and exhibiting a varied, medium brown, shiny patina, the figure stands 16" tall. The right arm is missing, and has been gone for quite awhile since the break shows an old surface. Metal eyes have been inserted. Early 20th century. Old private Florida collection since the 1980's.
Finely carved dance crest representing a female bust with an elaborate coiffe. Wood, with glossy dark-brown patina. Africa, Nigeria, Idoma Peoples. Height: 11 1/8" (28,2 cm). A Yixing Zisha Teapot, 20th Century. Exhibiting a cylindrical barrel-shaped body attached with a long double curve handle and a long upright spout and a small convex lid with a small round knob. Ornamented on one side with a Mao medallion accompanying an enamel running script calligraphy on the other side. The base is stamped with the 'trademark' of Shi Dabing. Height: 12.5cm. Length: 15cm.
A pair of Japanese carved wooden statues of the deities, Ebisu and Daikoku. The small shrine comes from Izumo Taisha, one of the few major shrines in Japan. The central deity of Izumo is Okuni Nushi no Mikoto and the name Okuninushi is also read Daikoku, hence the association with the fortune god. The shrine contains a stamp on the door with the name of the shrine. Age: 1960s. Size: height 3.25" width 2" length 3.5"
