18th century ivory netsuke of one large and 2 smaller eggplants. Superb and very strong early piece with bold design, excellent naturalistic depiction of the stem parts of the vegetables. Unusually fat, exceptionally beautiful wear to the surface from more than 200 years of handling, great patina with characteristic early sheen, old age lines. Himotoshi (cord hole) formed by a natural opening in the carving. Great sculpture. Length 1 1/2 inches.

Late Meiji - early Taisho ivory netsuke of seated Ebisu holding a sea brim in his hands. Ebisu is one of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune - that of fishing, which is particularly important in Japan. Very nicely carved, great smiling face, black ink highlights, beautifully depicted textile patterns, pleasant patina. 19th century small lacquered ivory netsuke of a shojo with fan in his hand. Shojo are mythical creatures living near the sea, and are particularly fond of sake. 19th century kagamibuta (“mirror lid”) netsuke with ivory top and ivory bowl. The top is carved in low relief with a seated boy wearing rich robe decorated with coin pattern and holding a butterfly net in his hand. Wonderful depiction of robe lines, elegantly incised textile decoration. Beautiful patina on ivory, swinging metal loop at the back for the cord. Diameter 1 1/4 inches.

Rather unusual complete 19th century burlwood set consisting of tobakoire (tobacco box, or inro with just one compartment), ojime and netsuke. Netsuke is very cleverly made out of one piece naturally representing a turtle with its head sticking out of the carapace. Excellent carving capturing the essence of the object, superb thoughtful face. Dark dense wood, beautiful patina with fantastic sheen.
