19th century Asakusa school staghorn netsuke of obihasami type carved with a design of a woven fence. The hooks at the top and bottom of the piece go around the edges of obi - a sash holding a kimono. Excellent clever and subtle piece typical of Asakusa school, warm patina, darker porous areas as is usual with staghorn. Length 4 inches.

Late Meiji (1890s to 1912) ivory netsuke of a squatting chubby baby boy wearing an apron and formal eboshi hat with long tassels that he holds in his hands. Subject may have to do something with Boy’s Festival or possibly sumo wrestling, I am not sure. Wonderful quality carving with great depiction of his fat limbs, face and body, apron patterns, hat texture and detailing of the tassels, beautiful patina. 19th century ivory netsuke of an acorn on a branch with leaves on top of a pile of chestnuts. Superbly executed elegant piece in Japanese taste, great naturalistic carving - see the carved crack in the skin of one chestnut, beautiful surface textures, himotoshi formed by a stem on the bottom. Excellent staining, wonderful mellow patina and beautiful wear consistent with age. Length 1 1/4 inches.

18th century ivory netsuke of Sennin Choshika - a noted drinker who could put away a lot of wine without getting drunk - in an unusually cheery mood wearing a skirt and sitting on rockery with his fan by his side. Strong early piece with excellent feel of happiness and ease, wonderful amber-colored patina, differently sized large himotoshi arranged in the 18th century fashion. Excellent abbreviated carving consistent with the strong spirituality of the person portrayed. Height 1 1/8 inches.

19th century ivory netsuke depicting the legend of Shitakiri Suzume (tongue-cut sparrow). Excellent and unusual version of classic design with the addition of the nasty old woman Arababa about to cut the sparrow’s tongue with her scissors. 19th century wooden netsuke of a makatsugyo (dragon-fish) on a base. The creature is rarely depicted in netsuke. According to a Chinese legend, a carp that can swim up the waterfall turns into a dragon, and thus serves as a paragon of perseverance, especially in scholarly pursuits. Excellent carving, great depiction of its face, front paws and spine, beautiful patina. Length 1 3/4 inches.

Late 18th to early 19th century ivory netsuke of a mandarin duck swimming among swirling waves. Very strong early carving, clever design, great face, superb quality depiction of different feathers. Large himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Beautiful wear and patina turning yellow on the bottom where netsuke was touching the silk of kimono. Height 1 5/8 inches.

19th century boxwood netsuke of a woman with a shallow bucket in her hands, and a horse standing behind her. Netsuke illustrates the legend of Kaneko - the strong woman who once stopped a runaway horse by effortlessly stepping on its rein which was dragging along the ground.
