19th century Chinese bamboo brushpot carved in the round with a continuous scene of Chinese scholars and peasants by rice bales under pine trees with gnarled branches, all in a setting of mountains, stream and clouds. Seven human figures, each in a distinct attitude, excellent quality carving - see the faces, robes, rocks, clusters of pine needles and textures of tree trunks. Late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) Chinese soapstone brushrest carved in a shape of a 5-peaked mountain rising from waves, and pine trees growing on it. Excellent rendition of raw energy of the stone, both dynamic and frozen in dramatic shape. Beautifully carved trees, very beautiful stone of cream color with pink areas and white spots, pleasant finish and great patina. Wonderful object for contemplation on scholar’s table. Late 19th century Chinese / Tibetan mala - Buddhist rosary consisting of 108 Chinese white/gray jade beads and 4 stained ivory ones that serve as spacers dividing the prayer beads into groups of 27 each. True nephrite jade, and ivory beads are carved with SHOW (long life) character. Traditionally Buddhist rosary of 108 even-sized beads is used for mantra recitation. Rather unusual 19th century Chinese glass seal of European shape. Beautiful transparent glass, pleasant finish to the surface. Imprint of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. The bottom is crisply carved with two sank characters that can be translated as CLEAR STUDIO, red seal paste in the grooves. Very nice object for scholar’s desk. 19th century wooden netsuke of sitting Tanuki (badger) beating on his extended belly as on a drum. In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: he drums with his paws on his large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness.
