19th century Chinese bamboo brushpot carved in the round with a continuous scene of Chinese scholars and attendants involved in scholarly activities under a pine tree with gnarled branches, all in a setting of mountains, waterfall and clouds. Ten human figures, each in a distinct attitude. Fantastic quality carving - see the faces, robes, rocks, clusters of pine needles and textures of tree trunks. Excellent patina, compressed dust in crevices. Superb piece in scholarly taste. Height 7 inches.

19th century Chinese scholar’s rootwood brushrest / scholar’s rock giving a perfect impression of a craggy mountain range with numerous crevices. Did not photograph well - photos came out too harsh. Wonderful object conveying the raw energy of the mountains. Natural root of a tree with old cracks, nicks and scratches adding to the wild energy of the piece. Beautiful patina, powerful piece for a scholar’s table. Length 5 1/4 inches, height 2 1/4 inches.

Late Qing Dynasty (1880s to 1911) Chinese Peking glass brushrest in a form of a mountain with 5 peaks of different height. Excellent rendition of raw energy of the mountain range with layered rock formations, dynamic and at the same time frozen in a mountain shape. Beautifully finished transparent glass, some scratches to the bottom, pleasantly heavy. Wonderful object for contemplation on scholars table. Length 5 7/8 inches, height 2 1/4 inches.

18th century or earlier (could be as early as 17th century) Tibetan double seal made out of iron which is traditionally believed to be of meteorite origin. Nicely carved seal surfaces on both ends - one round, one square, traces of red seal paste in the grooves. Perforation in the middle for hanging, wonderful patina from handling. Length 2 1/4 inches.

Late Qing Dynasty (1880s to 1911) Chinese scholar small jadeite seal. Does not photograph well. Wonderful austere piece appropriate for a scholar’s table, pleasant matte finish to the stone. The bottom is carved with three raised characters that can be translated as BAMBOO AND STONE RETREAT, red seal paste in the grooves. Off-white natural jadeite with apple green areas. Imprint of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. Length 1 1/4 inches.

19th century boxwood netsuke of a crouched shishi (Buddhist lion) holding a brocade ball between its paws. The brocade ball contains a loose ball inside, the eyes are inlaid with black horn. Very nice carving with wonderful depiction of curly mane and tail, pleasant patina and wear. Signed MASAMITSU on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 714 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1 1/8 inches.
