Early 19th century wooden netsuke of a group of dried food items including an eel, a persimmon and 3 chestnuts. Superbly clever and elegant netsuke, excellent quality carving, extremely beautiful wood with tiny streaks in its grain adding depth to the carving. Superb patina - probably the most beautiful that I have ever seen. Length 1 3/4 inches.

19th century kagamibuta (“mirror lid”) netsuke with ivory top and ivory bowl. The top is carved in low relief with a seated boy wearing rich robe decorated with coin pattern and holding a butterfly net in his hand. Wonderful depiction of robe lines, elegantly incised textile decoration. Beautiful patina on ivory, swinging metal loop at the back for the cord. Diameter 1 1/4 inches.

18th century ivory netsuke of a standing bearded Chinese sage bending forward. Wonderful early carving, nice smiling face, great depiction of stitching on his robe. Beautiful patina, old age lines, deep differently sized himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Tips of his feet are replacements. Height 2 7/16 inches.

19th century boxwood netsuke of sitting Tanuki (badger) beating on his extended belly as on a drum. In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: he drums with his paws on his large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness. Rather unusual complete 19th century burlwood set consisting of tobakoire (tobacco box, or inro with just one compartment), ojime and netsuke. Netsuke is very cleverly made out of one piece naturally representing a turtle with its head sticking out of the carapace. 19th century Asakusa school staghorn netsuke of obihasami type carved with a face of widely grinning oni. The hooks at the top and bottom of the piece go around the edges of obi - a sash holding a kimono. Excellent clever piece typical of Asakusa school, warm patina, darker porous areas as is usual with staghorn. Length 4 3/16 inches (107 mm).

19th century ivory netsuke of a half naked tattooed man subduing an armored opponent with a club. The netsuke represents Rochinshin - a former monk who became one of the Suikoden heroes. Chinese book called Shui-Hu-Chuan (Suikoden in Japanese, The Water Margin in English) was very popular in the capital Edo. 19th century wooden netsuke representing a fine model of a pottery monkey, the formalized creature seated with one hand on its stomach, the other one on its knee. Does not photograph well. Excellent carving capturing the essence of the object, superb thoughtful face. Dark dense wood, beautiful patina with fantastic sheen. Signed NAOTSUGU on the side - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 503, number 1815). Strong piece with distinct character, superb netsuke. Height 2 3/16 inches.
