19th century ivory netsuke of a standing man holding a bokuto (wooden sword) and a peach in his hands, a deer head with antlers and pelt perched on top of his head. Netsuke appears to illustrate one of the paragons of filial virtue, that of Enshi, who disguised himself in a deer skin and mingled with the herd to get deer’s milk, the only remedy for the eye disease of his old mother. 19th century ivory netsuke of a crouching hare licking its front paw. Excellent quality carving perfectly capturing the essence of the creature, wonderful incised fur, eyes are inlaid with light translucent horn. 19th century ivory and bronze netsuke in kagamibuta (mirror lid) form. The top is mounted with a bronze or shakudo galloping horse, gilding to the eye and spots on its body, superb crisp work. Beautifully captured sense of motion, great patina on ivory, old age lines, swinging metal loop on the back for the cord, compressed dust on the surface. Length 1 3/8 inches.

19th century boxwood netsuke of Shichifukujin (The Seven Gods of Good Fortune) happily sailing in Takarabune (a treasure ship). Most of the Gods carry their attributes, Ebisu even manages to catch a fish on the way. Essentially the netsuke is a wish for good luck and serves as a talisman as well. Excellent detailed carving, wonderful faces, extraordinary beautiful patina. Signed MASANAGA on the bottom. Superb sculpture. Length 2 3/16 inches.
