19th century Chinese wooden brushrest carved in the form of a crouching dragon. Dense hardwood (must be wood species related to huanghuali), wonderful warm patina, old nicks, ink and water stains adding character to the piece. 19th century Chinese natural rootwood scholars rock in a shape of a leaning rock or a crouching animal. The piece can be viewed from 4 sides, each view giving a wonderful impression of a mountain peak with crevices and conveying the raw energy of the mountains. Root of a tree lacquered red/brown and worn on protruding areas to natural wood from handling. Very clever use of root formation, beautiful warm patina, wonderful piece for scholars table. Very unusual 19th century Japanese kiseruzutsu (pipe case) in a shape of nyoi - a Buddhist scepter, with its head resembling Reishi (the fungus of Immortality). Like any dark object does not photograph well. Nyoi, or Ruyi scepter is a traditional symbol of scholarship, or transmission of knowledge.
