15th century Vietnamese white stoneware covered box with underglaze blue painting on the cover from Hoi An hoard, a historic sunken ship off Cu Lao Cham, central Vietnam. The box was made at Chu Dau in the Red River Delta, and was part of a cargo bound for the South-East Asia (Sumatra, Java or Borneo). The wreck was found in the mid-90's, the ceramics were taken to the surface, and sold by Butterfields in San Francisco. 15th century small Vietnamese white stoneware jar with underglaze blue painting. The jar comes from an old Japanese collection, and must have been part of a sunken ship cargo. It is very similar to Hoi An material lifted off Cu Lao Cham, central Vietnam. Beautiful bubbly glaze with fine crackle, central register with excellent free painting of alternating playful birds and clumps of bamboo grass. Late Meiji (1890s - 1910s) Japanese beaten copper incense burner - tripod with wide body, flaring mouth and 3 short feet. Wonderful object made by hammering a chunk of copper, raising it and giving it shape - no casting is involved. Fantastic clean gently curving organic form with beautifully hammered surface and superb reddish patina, very pleasant to the touch. Signed JUZAN on the bottom, beautiful object for scholarís desk. Height 2 1/4 inches, diameter 3 7/8 inches at the widest.

19th century ivory netsuke of two quails feeding on millet stalks with leaves. Superb quality carving - see their alert faces, differentiated feathers and finely carved millet stalks, eyes are inlaid with black horn. Beautiful wear and patina, himotoshi formed by a leaf on the bottom, old age lines. Signed OKATOMO on the leaf on the bottom, but the netsuke is late 19th century. Classic sculpture in great condition. Height 1 1/8 inches.

Tall and very amusing 19th century ivory netsuke of balding Ashinaga (long legs) carrying his similarly balding companion Tenaga (long arms) on his back as the latter holds a eel in his hand - apparently their fishing cooperation worked well this time. 19th century kagamibuta (mirror lid) netsuke with Shibayama inlay depicting Daikokuís mallet surrounded by 9 tama (Precious Gems). The bowl is dark rosewood, the top is boxwood, materials used for inlay are black horn, silver, 3 different kinds of mother of pearl, green stone (appears to be jade) and pink coral. The inlay is in perfect shape, no losses or repairs. Plain back, two parts fit nicely, beautiful mellow patina. Top diameter 11/16 inches, bowl diameter 1 9/16 inches.

19th century metal and ivory netsuke in kagamibuta (mirror lid) form. The top is silvered bronze (possibly solid silver) with medium relief fierce dragon twisted around the Precious Gem. Superb quality metalwork - see its face, claws and crisply incised differentiated scales. Warm patina, beautiful fat ivory bowl with clear cross-hatching pattern, swinging metal loop at the back for the cord. Very powerful piece. Diameter 2 inches.
