19th century boxwood netsuke of a crouched shishi (Buddhist lion) holding a brocade ball between its paws. The brocade ball contains a loose ball inside, the eyes are inlaid with black horn. Very nice carving with wonderful depiction of curly mane and tail, pleasant patina and wear. Signed MASAMITSU on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 714 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1 1/8 inches.

Early 19th century Japanese cloisonne ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) of flattened ball shape with flower and scattered petals design. Excellent early work with typical original pitting and beautiful matte surface giving very pleasant feel of age. Height 11/16 inches, diameter 3/4 inches.

18th century ivory netsuke of a standing sennin (Chinese sage) holding an open scroll in his hands. Excellent carving on his smiling face, beautiful flowing lines of his robe, nice etching of the robe patterns. The scroll ends are inlaid with gilded bronze. 19th century bamboo seal netsuke carved on the top with seated one-horned kirin with its mouth open wide. Photographs came out too harsh. Very expert carving, great sense of volume, wonderfully captured facial expression. Warm patina, beautiful texture to the material, traces of seal paste in the grooves on the bottom. Himotoshi is formed by the front paws of the beast. Enlargement 5 shows the photo of the bottom flipped left to right, so the seal can be read. Height 1 9/16 inches.

19th century marine ivory (walrus tusk) netsuke of a man in a court hat standing wearing geta (wooden clogs) holding an umbrella in his hand, and attended by a frog by his foot. The netsuke represents Ono no Tofu, who failed 7 times trying to attain a higher rank, but then saw a frog jumping to reach a higher branch and succeeding on the eighth attempt. 19th century boxwood netsuke of loyal Chinese warrior Yojo symbolically piercing the coat of his master’s enemy with his sword before committing suicide. Wonderful carving with great face (see the way he bites his lower lip), wonderful sense of movement produced by his flowing sleeves. Beautiful staining and patina, differently sized deep himotoshi. 19th century ivory netsuke of a standing oni samurai with sword, an oni boy holding a bundle with fish, and a puppy trying to get a fish for himself. Netsuke is an obvious parody on a domestic scene with human participants. Wonderfully carved, great faces, dark brown staining, horns and fan in the hands of a grown-up creature are gold lacquered. Beautiful wear and patina, in great condition. Height 1 3/4 inches.

His shaved head with a long pigtail indicates that he is Manchu rather than Han Chinese.
