18th century good size ivory netsuke of a rat and young sitting on a discarded zori (woven straw sandal) and ready to snack on a few chestnuts. Strong early carving, wonderful detailing - see the faces of the animals with dark abalone inlaid eyes, sandal texture and pitting on the chestnuts. Great hairwork with beautiful wear, old age lines, warm patina turning yellow on the bottom where netsuke was touching silk of a kimono. Length 2 3/8 inches.

Early 19th century wooden netsuke of sitting monkey holding a peach. Netsuke is beautifully carved out of kurogaki (black persimmon), does not photograph well. Excellent carving - see its fantastic thoughtful face. Himotoshi (cord opening) is formed by a natural opening between an arm and the body of the monkey. Very beautiful wear, excellent patina. Superb sculpture. Height 1 3/16 inches.

19th century wooden netsuke representing a fine model of a pottery monkey, the formalized creature seated with one hand on its stomach, the other one on its knee. Does not photograph well. Excellent carving capturing the essence of the object, superb thoughtful face. Dark dense wood, beautiful patina with fantastic sheen. Signed NAOTSUGU on the side - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 503, number 1815). Strong piece with distinct character, superb netsuke. Height 2 3/16 inches.

19th century kagamibuta (“mirror lid”) netsuke with ivory top and ivory bowl. The top is carved with two piebald puppies in different attitudes, all on a textured ground. Wonderful depiction of their brown spots and chunky bodies. Beautiful patina on ivory, compressed dust in crevices, gray silk cord. Diameter 1 7/16 inches.

19th century porcelain Hirado netsuke of a monkey dressed as a Sambaso dance actor, wearing a hat and holding a fan and a rattle in its hands. Its head and tongue are movable. Very funny facial expression, good overall modeling, delicate underglaze blue typical for Hirado, loss to the tip of its tongue. Height 2 1/4 inches.
