19th century ivory netsuke of one seated and one standing samurai, the latter holding a boy at his shoulder. All are wearing formal headgear, and most probably the boy represents a young Emperor or a hero. Superbly carved, great faces, elaborate hair and clothing arrangement and excellent textile patterns. 19th century wooden netsuke carved as a temple figure of Kanon (Guanyin in Chinese, the Boddhisattva of Compassion) holding a Precious Jewel in her hands. Carved out of yew wood in a variation of ittobori (one cut) style typical for the Hida school. Crisp detailing, wonderful tranquil face, beautiful flow to her robe, golden lacquer on the Jewel. Unusually well made 19th century porcelain netsuke of Hotei (one of the 7 Gods of Good Luck, also representing Maitreya - the Buddha of the future) with fan in his hand sitting next to his usual bag. 19th century ivory netsuke of a kneeling laborer grinding tea leaves in a mortar with a flattened disc grinder. Excellent carving - see the portrait quality face with a crooked smile and the muscles of his body. Beautiful even material, wonderful patina. Signed MITSUTOSHI (alternative reading is Koju) on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 498, number 1547). Height 1 1/16 inches.

19th century ivory netsuke of two quails feeding on millet stalks with leaves. Superb quality carving - see their alert faces, differentiated feathers and finely carved millet stalks, eyes are inlaid with black horn. Beautiful wear and patina, himotoshi formed by a leaf on the bottom, old age lines. Signed OKATOMO on the leaf on the bottom, but the netsuke is late 19th century. Classic sculpture in great condition. Height 1 1/8 inches.

Tall and very amusing 19th century ivory netsuke of balding Ashinaga (long legs) carrying his similarly balding companion Tenaga (long arms) on his back as the latter holds a eel in his hand - apparently their fishing cooperation worked well this time. Superb faces of portrait quality, extraordinary carving of their wavy hair, wonderful depiction of their absurdly long limbs, excellently incised hairy bodies. 19th century kagamibuta (mirror lid) netsuke with Shibayama inlay depicting Daikoku’s mallet surrounded by 9 tama (Precious Gems). The bowl is dark rosewood, the top is boxwood, materials used for inlay are black horn, silver, 3 different kinds of mother of pearl, green stone (appears to be jade) and pink coral. The inlay is in perfect shape, no losses or repairs. Plain back, two parts fit nicely, beautiful mellow patina. Top diameter 11/16 inches, bowl diameter 1 9/16 inches.

19th century metal and ivory netsuke in kagamibuta (mirror lid) form. The top is silvered bronze (possibly solid silver) with medium relief fierce dragon twisted around the Precious Gem. Superb quality metalwork - see its face, claws and crisply incised differentiated scales. Warm patina, beautiful fat ivory bowl with clear cross-hatching pattern, swinging metal loop at the back for the cord. Very powerful piece. Diameter 2 inches.
