Early 19th century (can be as early as 18th) Japanese scroll depicting a roundel with Rokkasen - Six Famous Poets of Japan - having a quiet conversation. Late 19th to early 20th century Japanese scroll depicting Kanzan and Jittoku with full moon behind them. According to a Chinese legend, Kanzan and Jittoku were Tang era monks who lived in a kitchen of a Zen Buddhist monastery and talked nonsensical language, which some took as a sign of them being enlightened. Japanese hanging scroll depicting Zen Buddhism patriarch Daruma enveloped in his monastic robe and wearing a wide rain hat with stupa finial. Two lengthy inscriptions in the upper part of the painting. Ink on silk, fantastic sour face, great composition and sense of volume. Last line on the left dates the painting to August of 1914: the date if followed by inscription “A Few Lines Composed by a Business Gentleman”.
