Late Meiji (1890s - 1910s) Japanese bamboo wrist rest used by painters and calligraphers, with low relief carving of a scholar standing on a boat on a river among rocks and trees. The scene is probably a reference to the famous “Ode to the Red Cliff”. Beautiful subtle piece, superb quality carving, rich warm patina, in excellent condition. Signed ITSUMI CHIKUSAI TO (carved by Itsumi Chikusai). Wonderful piece for scholar’s table. Length 8 1/4 inches, width 2 inches.

19th century/Meiji period Japanese paper knife/page turner made out of bamboo stem carved with low relief decoration of a bird in flight above a branch with leaves and Buddha’s hand fruit. Carving is made on the side of the knife that has the outer skin of the bamboo stem. Excellent quality work with beautiful staining, beautiful patina. The back is carved with continuation of the design, and signature NOBUMASA. Very nice object for scholar’s table. Length 11 inches.

1900-1910s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese temple boxwood seal of square section. Superb quality crisp carving of 16 characters in regular script, red seal paste in the grooves of the seal. Metal stud on the side indicates the position of the top of the imprint. Inscribed in ink on top and one side. Beautiful patina on the surface of wood. Height 2 3/8 inches, base 11/16 inches square.
