15th century small Vietnamese white stoneware jar with underglaze blue painting. The jar comes from an old Japanese collection, and must have been part of a sunken ship cargo, but not that of Hoi An hoard. It is very similar to Hoi An material lifted off Cu Lao Cham, central Vietnam. Beautiful bubbly glaze with fine crackle, central register with excellent free painting of alternating playful birds and clumps of bamboo grass. Pendant leaves around its mouth, Japanese lacquer repair to the mouth. ...click for details
