Unusual old Chinese scholar’s bamboo brushrest in a form of a shrew seated on a bunch of grapes with leaves and tendrils, while eating one of the fruits. Superb carving, extraordinary depiction of animal’s face and fur, luxurious tail, grapes and leaves. Wonderful quality material, beautiful finish and patina. 1930s Chinese scholar’s horn seal of square section with very elegantly and crisply carved characters on the base and traces of red seal paste in the grooves. One side is inlaid with an ivory stud to assist with the orientation of the impression. The impression of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. Beautiful light colored horn, mellow patina, overall in very good condition. Very nice object for scholar’s table. Height 2 3/8 inches, base 5/8 inches square.
