Ivory netsuke of a hare and a badger among waves in their wooden and clay boats, respectively, the hare holding an oar that he will use to finish the badger off. For the legend of “The revenge of the Hare” see H. Joly “Legend in Japanese Art”, p. 195. Uncommon subject, beautiful carving with rich textures of fur, clay, wood and cresting waves. Ivory netsuke of a seated monkey wearing a short jacket and using all of its limbs to perform a triple “see, speak and hear no evil” all by itself. Excellent clever design, compact shape, beautifully incised fingernails. Pleasant patina, great light staining and etching of its fur. Excellent detailed carving - his his wonderful face, tobacco pouch with pipe case by his side, a ladle for stirring the sand, brazier, book and kettle textures. Beautifully stained and finished. Small ivory netsuke carved by Ryoshu (born in 1912) - one of the best Japanese netsuke carvers of the 20th century. Netsuke represents Daruma (founder of Zen Buddhism) enveloped in monastic robe, and his eyes can pop in and out. Ivory netsuke of a seated dog licking its hind paw and wearing a cloth collar with a bell on it. Superb quality carving - see its face and body bulk. Good compact shape, cord hole is formed by is left hind leg, very beautiful even grained ivory, remarkable patina. Eyes are double inlaid with light and dark horn, signed IKKO SEIKOKU by its tail.
