Ivory netsuke in a shape of a chestnut carved by Ryoshu - one of the best Japanese netsuke carvers of the 20th century (see p. 886 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick). Superb piece in Japanese taste, perfectly rendered shapes, textures and colors of the nut, the most realistically carved piece that I have ever had. Very pleasant to the touch, wonderful patina. Ivory netsuke of a Buddhist nun seated in front of a gong, a striker in one hand and a rosary in the other, a boy attendant next to her about to pour tea from a kettle into a cup. Boxwood netsuke of a toad sitting on a discarded zori (straw sandal). Excellent rendition of the skin, paws and texture of woven sandal, great facial expression. Convex eyes of the toad are inlaid with dark horn, the looped thong of the sandal forms the himotoshi (cord opening). Beautiful staining, wear and patina.
