Very unusual 19th century ivory and lacquer netsuke of a young woman seated on a bench while breast-feeding an old one, while a little boy is tugging at his mother’s robe. The subject of the netsuke is one of the paragons of filial piety - young mother Saishi is neglecting her hungry child to breast-feed her toothless grandmother, who is not able to have solid food. 19th century kagamibuta (mirror lid) netsuke with bronze top and ivory bowl. The top is worked in relisf with copper inlays and gilding depicting a massive sumo wrestler and an attendant. Excellent quality work, great depiction of his body bulk and formal apron. Beautiful yellowish patina on ivory, silk cord. Diameter of the metal disk 1 1/8 inches, bowl diameter 1 3/8 inches.
