19th century round Japanese kogo (covered box for incense during tea ceremony) made in cloisonne technique. Simple elegant shape with decoration of a long tailed phoenix (symbol of the Empress) in flight on the top, and cherry flowers among scrolling vines on the bottom. Unusual background of silver foil squares throwing the light back and adding depth to the design, the rims are silvered on the inside. Nice finish with original pitting, green enamel on the inside. 19th century ivory ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved as a box with a diagonal divider, both compartments filled with rice. Excellent clever carving, beautifully carved rice texture, wonderful warm patina. Signed on the back - the signature appears to read ISSA - see NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 473, number 847). Size 5/8 inches square.

19th century staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved as a head of an octopus with thoroughly useless scarf tied around its forehead (usually those scarves are used by workmen to keep the sweat out of their eyes). Very nice carving, natural imperfections in staghorn, beautiful patina, in great condition, signed HAKUSHO on the back. Length 13/16 inches.

Very simple elegant shape with decoration of two butterflies in flight among various flowers, avanturine glass enamel highlights. Very pleasant finish, the center of the bottom is plain metal with some tarnish, overall in great condition. Wonderful humble piece in Japanese taste. Diameter 2 3/4 inches. Part of a small East Coast kogo collection.

19th century Chinese porcelain small footed dish with scalloped edge and enameled decoration of a scholar with 2 boy attendants in a garden setting. Nice potting, excellent quality delicate painting with differently colored enamels, in great condition. Seal script Tongzhi Emperor (1862-1874) reign mark on the bottom, and of the period. Diameter 4 inches, height 1 5/16 inches.

19th century Chinese porcelain covered round box for seal paste with famille verte enamel decoration of a scholar crossing a bridge from a group of houses to a lonely scholar’s hut with a view of rocks, a boat and distant mountains. Base is decorated on the outside in the same color scheme with low hills and pine saplings. Wonderful potting, beautiful assured painting with different enamel colors, in excellent condition. Quiet strong piece for scholar’s table. Diameter 2 3/4 inches.

The cup is enameled on the outside with a floral spray in 4 colors, and 3 sprays in blue. The inside of the saucer is decorated in a similar manner, some wear to the central sprays. 19th century Chinese porcelain small water dish for a cricket cage. The inside is painted in underglaze blue with a resting crane under a moon partially obscured by clouds. Wonderful quality uninhibited painting, beautiful glaze with tiny bubbles. Paste with typical blemishes, one tiny chip at the rim (can be see at about 1 o’clock on Enlargement 1). Very quiet subtle piece for scholar’s studio. Diameter 1 13/16 inches, height 7/16 inches.
