19c Japanese cloisonne tea ceremony KOGO phoenix
19th century round Japanese kogo (covered box for incense during tea ceremony) made in cloisonne technique. Simple elegant shape with decoration of a long tailed phoenix (symbol of the Empress) in flight on the top, and cherry flowers among scrolling vines on the bottom. Unusual background of silver foil squares throwing the light back and adding depth to the design, the rims are silvered on the inside. Nice finish with original pitting, green enamel on the inside. Great humble and rare piece in Japanese taste. Diameter 2 3/8 inches.
