| 19th century Indian bronze votive sculpture of Garuda standing on one knee and holding his hands in front of him in praying attitude (anjali mudra indicating total devotion). Garuda, being the mount of Vishnu, is regarded as representing essential qualities of the deity in animal form, and was worshipped as deity itself. He is present in both Hindu and Buddhist tradition, and usually has a body of a human, with a beak of a crow and wings. This piece was a part of a Lakshmi-Narayana group, and supported Vishnu and Lakshmi (the post of that couple went into the rings on the back of this Garuda). Excellent crisp casting and detailing, pleasant dark patina, traces of sandalwood powder used during worship. Height 3 5/16 inches. | ||
