| 19th century netsuke of a samurai wearing a straw coat standing with one foot on rockery and holding a straw hat above him. Judging by the camouflage quality of the coat, armor visible under it and a sword on his back the samurai is participating in an ambush. Unusual subject, superb quality carving - see his face, mesmerizing beauty of the flowing texture of the coat and detailing of the armor. Expert use of black and red ink for highlights, wonderful wear and patina, old age lines. Signed MITSUCHIKA (alternative reading is Koshu) in oval reserve on the bottom. Height 2 1/2 inches. | ||
