| Late 18th - early 19th century ivory netsuke of a peasant wearing loincloth and clutching a knife in his hand on as he crouches on the back of a huge soft shell turtle (Trionyx japonica) - an unusual animal, not often represented in netsuke. Superb strong early carving - see his nasty smiling face, stubble on his chin and hair on his back and limbs, and the Damascus steel lines on the blade of the knife. Some age lines as to be expected on an old piece, beautiful wear and wonderful yellow patina. Deep himotoshi consistent with the habit of the times. Length 1 5/8 inches. | ||
