| Early 19th century ivory netsuke of Benten seated on rockery among cresting waves playing a one-stringed koto to put the dragon of Enoshima to sleep, while the creature is curled around her back, and looking up at her with adoration. Benzaiten (Benten-sama) is the only female among the 7 Gods of Good Fortune - the one of knowledge, beauty and arts, especially music. Great composition, beautifully carved, well captured mood of the scene. Wonderful detailing - see their faces, wave textures and scales of the dragon. Excellent wear and patina, netsuke of characteristic early triangular section. Signed on the bottom FUBOKU followed by a seal of the artist - for information on Sogyokusai Fuboku see THE MEINERTZHAGEN CARD INDEX OF NETSUKE IN THE ARCHIVES OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM, p. 58. Formerly in Michael Tomkinson collection (#938). Great sculpture, rare artist. Height 1 7/16 inches. | ||
