| 19th century boxwood netsuke of a sennin (Chinese sage) wearing a mugwart leaf cape carrying on his back a basket suspended on an axe, and a gouble gourd water bottle on his side. Superb carving to the last detail - see the basket, the gourd and leaf patterns. Wonderful warm patina, himotoshi formed by the basket on the back. Signed GYOKUSEN in rectangular reserve on the back - the artist is Gyokusen Tomochika - for a good discussion of this rare carver see p. 1151 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick.
