| 19th century painted wood okimono of standing Zen Buddhism patriarch Daruma enveloped in his monastic cape and robe, and holding a flywhisk in his hands. The carving is done in ittobori (one cut) style specifically used for famous Nara dolls. Superbly carved ferocious face, beautifully painted eyes and facial hair, clever treatment of robe as an assembly of geometric planes. Signed BAIGEN followed by kakihan (carved monogram of the artist) on the back - this Nara netsuke carver is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 450, number 44). Height 4 3/4 inches. | ||
