| 19th century wooden netsuke of a mask maker fast asleep as he leans on an open box that contains two miniature ivory masks - one of Okame, and the other of green oni with horns. Wonderfully carved - see the pensive face, gentle lines of his robe, differently sized deep himotoshi (one lined with ivory), beautiful wear and patina, in great condition. Signed MIWA followed by kakihan (carved monogram) of the artist - this excellent carver is discussed on p. 792 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Superb netsuke by the master carver, formerly in the collection of San Francisco Museum of Art. Length 1 3/16 inches. | ||
