| 18th century unmounted Tibetan thangka depicting Vaishravana (Kubera) - one of the Four Great Kings and the Guardian of the North. He is also worshipped as the God of Wealth and the promoter of prosperity. He is sitting on a lion standing on a lotus throne, and in his left hand he is holding his usual companion - a jewel-spouting mongoose, symbolizing the deliverance of living beings from poverty. Central figure is surrounded by his eight attendants, the Ashvapatis (riders), protectors of the Eight Directions. Above Vaishravana there is a figure of Vighnantaka who removes all the obstacles on the way to prosperity. Mineral pigments on roughly woven cotton typical for the period, no markings on the back. Wonderful quality painting, superb patina, beautiful icon, overall in great condition for a 200 years old devotional painting. Size 17.5x13 inches (44x33 cm). | ||
