19c Japanese scroll Kanzan & Jittoku by Inose TONEI
Late 19th to early 20th century Japanese scroll depicting Kanzan and Jittoku with full moon behind them. According to a Chinese legend, Kanzan and Jittoku were Tang era monks who lived in a kitchen of a Zen Buddhist monastery and talked nonsensical language, which some took as a sign of them being enlightened. Ink and colors on silk, excellent faces, beautiful brushwork - see ink washes depicting their hair. Tiny bit of foxing, otherwise in great condition. Seems to be remounted recently in brocade silk mounts, wooden scroll ends. Inscribed KANZAN JITTOKU in Japanese on the outside of the scroll. Signed in ink SENSAI, and marked with red paste seal. Sensai is the go (artistic name) of Inose Tonei (1839-1910). Scroll size 51x21.5.5 inches, painting size 14x16 inches.
