| Late Meiji (1890s to 1910s) chaire (tea caddy for storing powdered green tea used in tea ceremony) with cover. Seto ware with stoneware body of a shape reminiscent of double gourd. Beautiful variegated brown glaze pooling and forming drops by the bottom. Typical oval lines on the bottom left by a string used to cut the piece off the potter’s wheel. Bold incised mark of a potter on the bottom, old turned bone lid. Two rough areas around the rim covered by the lid are not chips, but original features of chaire. Beautiful piece with strong character, very pleasant feel of age. Height with cover 4 3/8 inches. | ||
