19c netsuke DISCARDED OBJECTS by GYOKUHO
19th century ivory netsuke carved as a group of discarded broken objects, including a Buddhist gong, water pot with broken cover and stand, a saw, scissors, a lock, large furniture staple, a tray and several other fragments. Unusual and rare Buddhist subject with excellently captured mood of melancholy, superb carving with deep undercutting, absolutely realistic depiction of shapes and textures. Beautiful wear, compressed dust in crevices, wonderful mellow patina. Signed GYOKUHOSAI for Gyokuho on the bottom - the artist is very well known for that kind of work and is discussed on p. 424 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Excellent netsuke of its type. Length 1 7/8 inches.
