| 19th century marine ivory (walrus tusk) netsuke of a man in a court hat standing wearing geta (wooden clogs) holding an umbrella in his hand, and attended by a frog by his foot. The netsuke represents Ono no Tofu, who failed 7 times trying to attain a higher rank, but then saw a frog jumping to reach a higher branch and succeeding on the eighth attempt. He later became a minister, as well as a celebrated calligrapher. Very nice carving - see his thoughtful face and delicately incised textile patterns. Beautiful patina, typical walrus tusk texture on the back. Height 2 5/16 inches. | ||
