A beautiful high quality Kyoto doll or ningyo depicting a dancing girl in its own case, dating to the late Meiji period (1868-1912). The girl is most likely a performer at the Miyako Odori in Kyoto, where the doll was purchased. A type of Isho Ningyo, the quality of workmanship is extremely high. Only the very best dolls have teeth and this doll is no exception. Also the artist has used his all of his skill to make the doll stand on one leg - the dancer's left leg is actually about 1/8" off the base! The doll's face and hands are fine white gofun ( many layers of applied crushed oyster shell) with glass eyes. The doll has silk hair and the costume is fine chirimen silk with exquisite hand embroidered gold thread (see detail). Dimensions: 14" x 5 1/2" x 5". Overall condition is very good for age with original case. An important addition to any collection of Japanese dolls.

A rare boxed and signed Japanese wooden doll depicting a noh performer. The doll has been hand carved from a single piece of semi-hardwood and hand painted. The reverse of the sliding lid bears the signature of the artist "Haku Ho" and is dated Showa 17 (1942). The same signature is carved on the reverse of the doll base (see pictures). The female noh performer, complete with mask is adorned with a period kimono with exquisite hand painted flowers. Of the many types of Japanese ningyo, this is the first all wood doll we have listed. Dimensions: 11" x 4 1/2" x 3 1/2' Overall condition is very good for age with original case and covering cloth. An important addition to any collection of Japanese dolls.

Delicate hand-painted fall leaf patterns in thick raised relief gold adorn the chocolate-red base coat lacquer. This is most likely a seasonal natsume for use in the fall. The body and lid are turned wood coated in urushi or lacquer. Overall condition is excellent for age. Dimensions: 2 3/4" x 2 3/4". This Taikai cha-ire is of the low squat type with a round shoulder (It is slightly larger than the Chukai chaire). A rich honey chocolate glaze with umber accents dance around the body of this Seto chaire. The heavy ivory lid is gold lined and exhibits a slight yellowing through age. The foot is unglazed with the base featuring the typical string-cut pattern, dark through years of use. Overall condition is excellent for age with the shifuku showing some light stress. A rich honey brown glaze with umber accents around the body typical of Seto chaire. The textured bone or antler lid is gold lined and exhibits a slight yellowing through age. The foot is unglazed with the base featuring the typical string-cut pattern, dark through years of use. Overall condition is excellent for age. This cha-ire is of the Chukai low squat type with a generous lid. A rich chocolate brown glaze with flecks around the body. The large heavy lid is gold lined and exhibits a warm yellowing through age; this is clearly an old piece. An exquisite tea ceremony 'Bunrin' chaire or tea caddy, complete with its shifuku or silk storage bag, dating to the early 20th century or earlier. Of the several different shapes available, the bunrin or 'bulb' shape' is perhaps the rarest. A rich burnt umber glaze with accents of blue around the neck. The heavy ivory lid is gold lined and exhibits a warm yellowing through age. The foot is bare but bares an artist's / kiln stamp. The base is typically string-cut and dark through years of use. Overall condition is excellent for age. Dimensions: 3" x 2 3/4". An excellent addition to any serious collection of teaware or for use by the tea practitioner.

A beautiful Japanese Samurai sword handle or 'Tsuka' in a haichi style dating to the Edo period (1615-1868). Tight black ito wrap over rayskin with a pair of dragon menuki. (Please see close up shots of the dragons). Fuchi and kashira features basket full of shellfish and blossom in gold and shakudo on a nanako ground. The hand crafted workmanship is very high quality with great attention to detail. The ito shows signs of handling with some loss of rayskin underneath. Fuchi, kashira and menuki are easily removable for remounting or for use together with the tsuka on a period mounting. Dimensions: Overall length: 15cm x 3.8cm. Hole for tang in the fuchi: 2.8cm x 7mm. Mekugi ana is 3.5cm from base of fuchi. An excellent original replacement fitting for a period sword.
