A beautiful Katakuchi or lipped bowl of lacquered wood construction dating to the late Meiji period (1868-1912). Katakuchi were used to transfer sake from the barrel to tokkuri at weddings or at Shinto ceremonies on festival days where sake was distributed to many people. The most noticeable feature of Katakuchi is their generous spout which is carved from a separate piece of wood and joined onto the bowl section. Construction is of semi-hardwood with a beautiful chocolate brown lacquer coating. Katakuchi are found in every collection of Japanese Mingei or folk craft in major museums. They are usually red or black but this is the first brown colored one that we have come across. There is a 'x' mark on the base. Overall condition is very good with no chips to the lacquer and slight hairlines due to wood shrinkage. Dimensions: 15" at widest point x 7.5" high. Would make an excellent addition to any collection of Japanese Mingei objects.
