An excellent antique Japanese Samurai armor Men no shita or Menpo / Mempo dating to the Edo period (1615-1868). This is basically a Nara Men type mask in the "Ressei Men" style ("Furious Power") with a savage, violent expression. The menpo is of iron construction throughout with a detachable nose and four lame / stage Yodare kake finished in dark ebony lacquer. The interior is of typical cinnabar red lacquer with the yodare kake finished in green silk sugake odoshi lacing. The most striking feature of this menpo is the mustache and imperial on the protruding chin. The hair is most likely Yak and there is no loss at all which is rare. Another unusual feature (often found on better quality masks) is the Tsuyo-otoshi-no-kubo or perspiration drainage tube under the chin. There is also another perspiration drainage hole or Ase Nagashi-no-ana present just behind the drainage tube. Next to these drainage holes there are two Odome or securing hooks to secure the chin straps. Overall this is a menpo in very good condition with almost no loss of lacquer and all lacing intact. Dimensions: 10" x 8" x6 1/2". An excellent addition to any collection or display of Samurai artifacts.

A superb Japanese Samurai iron six plate Kabuto / maedate of unusual construction with five lame shikoro dating to the late 17th C. (Genroku / Kyoho period 1688-1736). The way that each plate has been folded back on itself and joined to the next is quite unusual. This was a custom made kabuto for a daimyo or one of his senior ranking officers. The kasajirushi-no-kan on the central rear plate features the paulownia crest or mon which further identifies this piece with high ranking status. The large fukigaeshi or side flanges are gilded with printed leather and silk decoration. The hachi section is finished in black lacquer which is in very good condition with no loss. The five stage iron shikoro is in the 'komanju' style with extensive gilding and kebiki odoshi lacing that is in very good condition with no breaks. There is an agemaki bow at the rear and the tehen-no-kanamono is of gilded copper and brass construction. At the joint of each plate there is a decorative strip of gilded leather and also another strip along the top of the mabizashi. The blue leather sweatband liner is original along with the most of the ukebari stitched cotton liner. However, the roof section has been replaced with period material and the shinobino-no-o helmet cords are a replacement. The maedate or crest is an Edo period gilded piece of brass construction and not a replica. This kabuto was purchased here in Kyoto direct from a samurai family. Dimensions: 15" x 10" x 14". Maedate: 6" x 6". Additional photographs available on request.

A heavy Japanese Edo period (1615 - 1868) samurai sword kogai for a wakizashi sword. Kogai fit in a pocket in the saya or scabbard of a buze-zukuri mounting. Often referred to as a skewer, it served a dual purpose. It was used as a bodkin for a samurai's hair-do, while the the projecting section at the base of the handle was used as an ear cleaner. The pointed end is dull but would still be capable of dispatching an opponent if called upon in an emergency. Kogai and Wari-Kogai (split kogai) were made by the same artisans who made the base of the Kozuka. At most only two of these three items were carried in the pocket of the scabbard. All three objects as well as fuchi and kashira are highly collected items for their intricate craftsmanship. This kogai is typical of earlier pieces and is of shakudo or yamagane as the color is quite dark. The sharp tapering of the shoulders is also distinctive of earlier pieces. The design features a set of abstract shells in high relief with nanako ground around it. Dimensions: 23.5cm x 1.4cm x 5mm. Overall condition is good with signs of insertion into the saya.
