Born Frederick Swedlun to Swedish parents in Kansas, it is believed he took the pseudonym "Ernest Fredericks" when he moved to Chicago to study art. After a time, he made his way to Eureka Springs, Arkansas in later life to paint and teach under his real name of Fred Swedlun. Fred and his son Glenn Swedlun taught art classes in the Ozarks. Many of the regional landscape paintings from Ernest are of this area and are signed Fred Swedlun. He died in the 1950s.
