Laid down on board with some window toning and abrasions. Glue remains in margins no closer than 1/2" out from the window line. Sheet measures 20" x 25 3/4; Matting is 24" x 28;" Mat Window is 17 1/4" x 21 1/4."
Original Engraving from A Brief And True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia by Thomas Hariot, 1590. Signed 'Theodore De Bry' in late; also acknowledging in plate 'Jodocus Winghe,' who drew the picture. The corners are tipped (glued) to a laid paper under sheet as found from a collection of de Bry's work in an 18th Century scrap album. This is a scarce engraving in very nice condition. Sheet measures 9 7/8" x 7 1/2," Matting is 15 1/4" x 12."

This rare historic satirical etching depicts Matthew Lyon, a US Congressman from Vermont and Roger Griswold, a noted Federalist representative from Connecticut, engaged in a brawl on the floor of the House of Representatives. Hand-signed and inscribed 'To Miss Barbara Gerhard With Best Wishes, Edward E. Bishop' in ink just below the bottom plate mark and signed 'Richard E. Bishop '38' in plate.
