Original Engraving from A Brief And True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia by Thomas Hariot, 1590. Signed 'Theodore De Bry' in late; also acknowledging in plate 'Jodocus Winghe,' who drew the picture. The corners are tipped (glued) to a laid paper under sheet as found from a collection of de Bry's work in an 18th Century scrap album. This is a scarce engraving in very nice condition. Sheet measures 9 7/8" x 7 1/2," Matting is 15 1/4" x 12."

This rare historic satirical etching depicts Matthew Lyon, a US Congressman from Vermont and Roger Griswold, a noted Federalist representative from Connecticut, engaged in a brawl on the floor of the House of Representatives. This "Lyon-Griswold" incident is still referred to when encountering hostile political situations in Congress.
