Vintage Japanese Silk Kimono Haori Vest with Black Fan

Fans are important in Japanese culture and are woven into this vintage Japanese kimono silk vest, with a ground of black and tiny gray stitches. The colorful lining (light tan, orange, orange-red, violet and light gray) has a dyed pattern representing the “three friends in winter” (bamboo, pine and plum) and sandbars. In the center of the back is one white family crest (mon) with an open folding fan motif. Having one-five family crests on a Japanese garment meant that it was not worn every day, but only on special formal or semi-formal occasions.

Condition: excellent outside and inside. Size: 27” across the top; 37” top to bottom. U.S. women’s size: x-small, small, or medium. This vintage lightweight silk kimono vest is not designed to overlap or close in the center, if worn. If desired, you could add your own closure. Such superior textile artwork would also add a lovely touch to home décor.
