This is a rare old Japanese scale. It was probably invented the early part of 1900s. The scale was held with the one thick looped rope and comodities were hooked on the iron hook, as the scale was balanced by a variety of weights. The inscriptions say 'teisui' (the name of this type of scale), 'Nagaoka' (probably a city of Kyoto) and 'Kanai' (a family name). Ca Early 1900s Dimensions: approximately 54" long

The zigzag pattern in the middle also creates an interesting "mobility" for the design. The reverse side has an elegant motif on the edge and "daimin-ka-nen-sei" mark in the center.
