A rare and fine example of mid 19th century Japanese porcelain from the Arita area of Japan. It is completely hand painted depicting classic ancient scholars with books and brushes. There are touches of brushed gold on the boarders, clothing, and furniture. The porcelain is a gray-off white. The painting is extremely well done. Very fine and unusual silver wire Japanese box, circa 1880 with mythological animals,phoenix,lion, flying dragon. Also, butterflies, scrolls,and trailing vines and flowers, all on a medium blue background.
