This is a finely potted and enamelled “Over-The-Wall” famille rose Ogee Bowl. It shows three stem of bamboo tree drawn from the exterior of the bowl and then continues into the interior of the bowl with persimmons hanging on to the bamboo plant with the twig crossing over the rim into the interior of the bowl. A little distance away, there is a small butterfly flying towards the persimmons on the outside of the bowl. This form of painting or design is known as “Over-The-Wall” technique. The Ogee bowl bears the imperial Guangxu (1875-1908) reign mark in under-glaze blue colour. This is a collector item not to be missed. They are rare in both the shape and “Over-The-Wall” design. Such bowl and design is very hard to come by and are mostly in private collection. The Ogee bowl is in very good condition. There is no hairline crack, rim or foot fritting, except for a very small patch of 0.1x0.4cm which is not noticeable unless upon very close inspection(picture 5). The measurement of the “Over-the-Wall” Ogee Bowl : Diameter is 14.3cm and the Height is 5.2cm. Note: The Chinese term for the drawing “Over-The-Wall”, depending on the design, is called “Guo-Chian-Zhi” or “Guo-Chian-Hua”. The translation is “Over-The-Wall-Stem” or “Over-The-Wall-Flower”. It is simply referred to as “Over-The-Wall” design. |
